What is Regenerative Therapy?

When injured or invaded by disease, our bodies have the innate response to heal and defend. What if it was possible to harness the power of the body to heal and then accelerate it in a clinically relevant way? What if we could help the body heal better?

The promising field of Regenerative Medicine is working to restore structure and function of damaged tissues by allowing these tissues to heal, many times without surgery.

People who suffer from musculoskeletal pain share our common goal to minimize the pain and improve daily functioning. To date, The Morgan Kalman Clinic has done this very effectively through quality physical therapy, injections, medications, and when necessary, surgical intervention. In appropriate cases, regenerative therapy options hold wonderful healing potential and represent the future of modern medicine.

Regenerative therapy uses a patient's own tissues to initiate the healing process. Two regenerative treatments we currently perform are from the patient's own natural stem cells (Stem Cell Therapy) and from the patient's own natural growth factors, via PRP Therapy (platelet-rich plasma).

For Stem Cell Therapy, we obtain a patient’s own stem cells by extracting stem cells from the patient’s fat and/or bone marrow. These cells are centrifuged down to identify and separate specific “specialized” cells that will help heal tissues. These regenerative cells are injected into the targeted site under ultrasound guidance, with the potential to repair the damaged tissues: such as bone, ligament, cartilage or tendon. Due to these “repair cells,” the body becomes stimulated, allowing it to generate new healthy tissue, accelerating the patient’s healing process, giving the body a chance to simply heal on its own.

For PRP Therapy, we use the patient’s own blood, and centrifuge that down to concentrated platelets. These platelets are rich in growth factors, help stimulate healing. Once we have these cells, we are than able to re-inject them into the patient’s injured tissues under ultrasound guidance.

By using regenerative medicine, we have accomplished significant improvement in patient outcomes without surgical intervention.
